What RIR means
Reps in reserve is an estimate of how many more complete repetitions you could have performed before momentary muscular failure. Finish a set knowing you could have completed two more repetitions with the same range of motion and technique: that is about 2 RIR. Zero RIR means another full repetition was not possible.

RIR is not the same as discomfort
High-repetition leg work can burn while several repetitions remain. A heavy single can feel serious while still moving cleanly. Estimate remaining performance, not breathing rate, muscle burn or motivation. The question is: how many more repetitions could you complete to the same standard?
Research shows RIR estimates can be useful, but accuracy varies. Estimates tend to improve near failure and with heavier loads, while lighter, longer sets are easier to misjudge. Why not train every set to failure?
Training hard matters, but failure is not uniquely required for muscle growth. A meta-analysis found no clear evidence that momentary muscular failure is superior to non-failure training for hypertrophy. Read the proximity-to-failure meta-analysis. Stopping slightly earlier often preserves repetitions and technique across later sets while reducing unnecessary fatigue.
Failure can still be appropriate on a stable machine or isolation exercise, especially on an occasional final set. It is less attractive on a heavy free-weight compound where technique breakdown has a larger cost.
How RIR relates to RPE

This mapping is a convention, not a universal sensation scale. Write either RIR or RPE consistently so your log remains comparable.
How to improve your estimate
- Standardise the repetition. Use the same range of motion, pause rules and acceptable technique.
- Record the estimate immediately. Do not revise it after seeing what you hoped to lift.
- Use repeat sets as feedback. If reps collapse despite full rest, the earlier estimate was probably optimistic.
- Calibrate selectively. Occasionally take a safe machine or isolation set to technical failure and compare the result with your prediction.
- Watch the trend. An imperfect scale can still guide decisions when used consistently.

Worked example: three sets of eight
Your target is 3 × 6–8 at 2 RIR. Set one reaches eight and feels like 3 RIR; set two reaches eight at 2 RIR; set three reaches seven at 2 RIR. Keep the load next time and try to reach eight on the final set. If you instead force an eighth rep at 0 RIR, you have met the rep count but missed the effort target.
When RIR should change
- Use more RIR during a deload, after poor sleep or when technique is inconsistent.
- Use less RIR on stable accessory exercises when you need a clear hypertrophy stimulus and recovery is good.
- Keep more reserve during explosive work; the set ends when speed or power quality falls, not at muscular failure.
- Do not use RIR to train through sharp pain, dizziness or unusual symptoms.
Turn effort into a progression rule
RIR makes reps comparable. Reaching the top of a range at 2 RIR is more informative than reaching it by grinding to failure. Combine this guide with progressive overload to decide when to add weight, reps or sets.
A training log only helps if it captures the decision, not just the number. Flux records completed sets and effort so the next recommendation can respond to what actually happened.
